Region
This beautiful region is situated 200Km south of Paris and extends west along the high reaches of the Loire River. This is a cold climate region making top quality wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and includes the following famous villages; Sancerre, Pouilly Sur Loire, Quincy and Menetou-Salon. The soils have a high percentage of flint and limestone, and this results in crisp, aromatic whites and perfumed, elegant rose and reds. Littered with artisan producers, the best single Domaine wines are made in small quantities and are of top quality.
Producer
Domaine de la Garenne has a long history, based in the village of Verdigny, one of the oldest wine growing towns in Sancerre. The first vines were worked in 1820 by Jean-Louis reverdy. In 2008 Fabienne and her husband took over the winery, and are committed to making wines that reflect the terroir, with a focus of maintenance of the three different soil types of the region. Putting the Domaine through organic conversion in respect of this, they believe that by taking care of their vineyard they in turn get the most expression out of the wines.
Tasting Notes
Grown on the three different soil types of Sancerre but predominantly the soft limestone `Caillottes`. This wine has intense aromas of blackcurrant leaves and citrus fruit, with an elegant steely minerality on palate. A generous texture and pacey refreshing acidity leaves a very satisfying finish.
Food
Serve with sea bass or dover sole with a lemon, caper and parsley sauce.
